17 | I just wanna fly

IN MY JOB WE NEVER GET BORED. Months ago, at the beginning of summer, some smart ass of upper floors introduced a terrible song that every cabin supervisor must play out loud before every on-board bar service, about ten minutes after take-off. Result: they issued a memo which forbid to play the above-mentioned song, probably because some passengers complained. I still remember the flights on early morning, when the passengers woke up suddenly thanks to the ducky song, whose only purpose was probably to wake up as many passengers as possible to sell few coffees or cappuccinos more. The only result was obviously to piss everybody off without increase the sales, the real engine of our aircrafts.

Now, after a couple of month of acoustic break, there is a new memo about that infernal song and I can already forecast the effects it will produce. Since in our company any memo is as valid as Gengis Kahn's orders, that means it will be followed with fear and self-abnegation, the cabin's supervisors will torture again our poor passengers, whose only sin is to buy cheap tickets (and even not always cheap). I will have to listen to a couple of minutes of yells over the sound barrier per flight, in every service. It means around six songs per day, plus other eight thousand daily PAs we make trying desperately to sell everything, and more.

We all know that Americans are always in the forefront in consumerism and having a look online I found KATU.com, an online newspaper of Portland, Oregon. I found an interesting article about some commercial centers of this city where were born, twist of fate, both Matt Groening and Ray Dolby, the engineer who invented the systems of noise reduction and the Dolby Surround. In the article (that you can read here) they say how the volume of the music in some stores goes beyond the noise threshold, so much so that some customers run away from the shops and some others not even enter. Unfortunately you cannot get out of a plane, unless you reach your destination. The article remarks the danger of high levels of sound for the employees in particular, since the corporate policy is not to turn down the music, not even when customers complain. Moreover the employees, afraid of reprisals, do not report the problem to the OSHA-Occupational Safety and Health Administration, so it cannot intervene on their behalf.

If you leave feeling like your hearing is a little muffled or you have ringing in your ears, that can be a sign of some damage and long term-effects would be noise-induced hearing loss".
Audiologist Cindy Behrand says these high volume sales tactics are dangerous: "If you leave feeling like your hearing is a little muffled or you have ringing in your ears, that can be a sign of some damage and long term-effects would be noise-induced hearing loss".

As they say, once in the bottom you can always dig! So let's sing all together till hearing loss: let's fly, let's fly...!!

QUOTE OF THE DAY | A lot of people believe that if everybody just did what they were told -obeyed- everything would be fine. But that's not what life is all about. That's not real. It's never going to happen. Matt Groening
